Around the Corner

Take a walk down this cobbled street and around the corner...

The trip had been talked about for years. They dreamed of going on their honeymoon but could never afford it. Their kids were through college, the mortgage was paid, and now they could take the vacation of a lifetime. They would walk the cobbled streets, dine al fresco, visit museums, get lost in the city turning down alleys and backroads, just wandering.

Walking down one more cobbled street, she turns the corner and sees a tiny little chapel. The open door and faint light welcomes her inside. A priest is at the front of the sanctuary and turns to smile at her. She walks partially down the aisle and sits in a pew.

The long awaited vacation had been planned, had been paid for. The travel guides had been paged trhough endlessly. Then he became ill. On his deathbed, he insisted she take that trip and think of him.

She thought of him as she sat in that pew alone, crying.

Waiting on the Dock

He/She is on that boat coming to you.
Share the story or tell me about it in a poem.

Gemma had never been the patient one, but she was willing to wait for this. But the boat kept steady on its course, straight for the dock and all she knew was that she was waiting for a boy named Dominic Vreeland. "About your age." Her mother had said distractedly. Gemma didn't know how she would explain to Alex that her mother, his suppoused aunt, wasn't there to greet him. She wondered if he had known about her -Gemma- known that he'd had a cousin for the past 18 years. Gemma hadn't. She didn't even know that her mother had other family until a few days before.

The boat was near enough now that she could see the faces of some of the dozen or so passangers. She didn't know what to think- that she would know him in one glance? People started to file onto the dock around her, and there was only one boy her age. He looked normal to her, though he was travel worn and clearly exhausted, hardly able to hold on to his small suitcase. "Dominic?" She said and stepped right up to him, deciding to get it over with. He looked at her through a fog and then much to her surprise, smilied and said, "Hi, Gem."

and then use it in a creative way.

"There are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls." (George Carlin)

Shutting the book and returning to her desk, she turned the words over in her head as the pencil twirled between her fingertips. On a full moon night such as this, it seemed to be true. The countryside, touched by the moonlight, was still. It was as though the night was holding its breath, waiting, like a bow poised above a stringed instrument, a conductor with his baton raised, the listener perched on the edge of a chair. The cool air was thick with expectation.

Yet no music would sound into the night. Instead, the moon simply paused in the blue-black sky, her light spreading deep into the corners of the night, illuminating loudly the secrets of women working quietly in private chambers. As the silver dial reached the height of its waxing, some blew out candles, some prayed or recited incantations, while others tossed their arms upward to embrace their celestial queen.

Smiling softly, her pencil touched the paper. On such a silent night, when the wolves have lost their voices, the women will sing with the moon.

Winter Poem

Let this wintery scene inspire a poem today.

_____________

The snow came quickly
Settling itself in
Blanketing the entire world
Turning everything white

It covers the rooftops
It hangs from the trees
Leaving us in darkness
And slowing us all down

Children run gleefully
Throwing the snow
Adults all grumble
They have somewhere to go
