The shame was gnawing away at him, like a starving parasite gorging on his secret. Unable to face them any longer, he fled from those prying eyes; the ones that judged and tormented him. He had willingly followed the song of the river that called to him, chanting promises of peace and forgiveness.

At the water’s edge, he fell to his knees, begging an unseen deity to show mercy. The only response was the whisper of the river inviting him, crooning his name. The water rippled gently like beckoning hands, pulling him forward. He gradually rose to his feet and, with hesitant steps, slowly waded into the water, each one taking him deeper into the murky channel.

The feathery touch against his legs did not surprise him. He was expecting it, knew they were there to welcome him. The pressure increased, wrapping firmly around his ankles, moving quickly up his legs. His heart began to race, playing a rapid, deafening rhythm against his chest. He told himself this was necessary and deserved, that punishment must be meted out. Then suddenly, without warning, he was pulled beneath the surface where his arms and legs were forcefully held. The black water was suffocating, crushing him, stealing every last breath from his lungs, until there was nothing but mist.

On the shore, the young ones gazed coldly at the water, watched the last ripples fade away.

Instrumental Offerings from The Barn

As she walked away, she remembered that this was the barn of her family; handed down through the generations. Hard working hands, many long days of life were unfolded in this barn. Her memory took her back to the time when she’d help her daddy feed the calves, and how they sucked on her legs and her hands and every part of her that they could reach. She loved those little suckers.

Remembering those days of her youth here, brought a feeling of gratitude to her heart. Knowing that this barn would remain throughout her life time, a remembrance of those childhood days; she’s able to walk with pride each time she enters and leaves this barn.

All cleaned up, this barn, and no longer the holder of calves and their momma’s; she feels good about the transition she has made of it. This barn will now become the place where she can enter into her life’s offering.

With all of her instruments left to rest, she walks away refreshed and ready to take on the world…outside of the barn.

I stood on the shore of the lake...

_________________________

I stood on the shore of the lake watching the mist rise off the surface of the water. My sleepiness wafted off of me in just the same way. There was coolness in the air that spoke of autumn whispers, not quite ready to be known.

As I inhaled the freshness of the morning I felt a renewed hope for what awaited us when we returned home. This little vacation was exactly what we had needed; that time to reconnect, to play together, the time to look into each others’ eyes.

His hand slipped around my waist, and I could feel the warmth reach the skin under my wrap. As he kissed my cheek and leaned his head against mine, I knew the promise of a new season was upon us.

Include a watch in your writing today.

_____________

Old watches hold entire lives within their tarnished gold casings. Days and days...both good and bad have been lived by the ticking of time.

The old watch was first held nervously when it slowly ticked towards the time to meet Erica's dad for the first time. That same watch guided me through the waiting room until I heard my daughters voice for the first time...the sound a of new baby gasping for the that first breath of air in this world. I looked at that watch marking a time of change in my life when Erica died. The last time I saw the watch, I put it in an envelope in my desk drawer that said "To Faith", knowing that I would not be returning to that desk again.

Faith, I'm not with you now but I'm s glad you found the watch. Use it to mark your time on this earth and use every minute it ticks off to move forward. Don't let the watch rule you, use it to track your paths towards your destiny.

~
Dan Felstead

******

She remembered her grandfather taking the watch out of his pocket. It was strange seeing a watch on a chain in a pocket and not on a wrist. Why was her grandfather so different than other men? Why did he cherish that odd thing so much? As a little girl, she felt embarrassed by it. Why did he have to tell time that way? And why did he always polish it with that cloth before he slipped it back into his pocket?

Now, at the age of 36, sitting in her grandpa's house going through his things, she sees that watch. It's secured in a worn, velvet-lined box. She picks it up and sees for the first time that it's engraved on the back: SDH 1890. She does the math and realizes it was her great-grandfather's watch, and the date marks his 18th year.

She then sees the tiny slip of paper where the watch had been: For Faith.

A tear falls down her cheek as she picks up that same old cloth and gently polishes the beautiful watch she cherishes so much.

I really enjoyed this unexpected exchange. Dan your prequel to Faith's writing was wonderful... both of you wrote so well today. ~ Laura Jayne

My cloak, my concealer!
Enshroud my insecurities.
Protect the pretense which I put on.
Shield my face in your appearance,
that none may know my true affection.

What man should dare say
how another must spend his day?

false face of camouflage
shield me from criticism
within my clique of confidants
cover me in your facade.

To each and all his very own,
but be careful of what is sown.

haloed hood, hide me amongst
the masquerade known as society.
disguise my sins with your visor,
as a fig leaf for Eveandadam.

For all fall short of perfection,
upon the more meticulous inspection.

Let none pose a threat
to the veil which screens
my semblance to Judah
as I hide in my air of invulnerability.

dangle freely from the tree
with hideous grin of hypocrisy.

Show me a semblance
of the price to be paid.
Will it be an apple, or a life,
forty pieces of silver, or my soul?

Trust is that which when earned
Does not heat when it is burned.

Am I so blind? False colors
cover-up that which is true.
That all are in disguise for fear
of posture and the pretext
that some are more worthy.

No stone is thrown as I stand fast,
awaiting judgement for my past.

Raise the curtain, tear down the wall,
ruin my own disguisement.
Not as a pariah with nothing to lose
but as a man, just a man, nothing more.

What ever has a man to fear,
but to have none other near.
Dance with me as we sing free,
Laugh as we love unconditionally.
