Waiting at a stop light...

_____________________

Kara sat in her car while she waited for the traffic light to turn green despite the steady blaze of red that seemed to taunt her into more waiting.

"It's my turn", she said out loud. Even though no one else was listening.

Disgruntled at the long wait and determined to get on with her commute, Kara began to tap her fingers on the steering wheel.

"It's my turn", she said out loud. Even though no one else was listening.

Her heart began to pound harder and harder as her irritation bloomed into full blown anger. She couldn't fathom a reasonable explanation as to why the light was taking so long to turn green.

"It's my turn", she yelled out loud and pounded her balled up fists on the steering wheel. Even though no one else was listening.

A car pulled up on her left side and Kara turned to look. As she did, her eyes caught a glimpse of a young girl who was firmly buckled up in her car seat in the rear of the car. The little girl began to entice Kara with a game of peek-a-boo.

Kara's heart immediately melted. Of course she wanted to play with this sweet little girl who was all smiles. The mom in the front seat of the car smiled and waved and nodded in approval of the game.

The tiny little girl dipped and tried to hide behind her hands with the grandest peek-a-boo gestures.

"It's my turn", Kara said out loud. Even though the little girl couldn't hear her. And, reciprocated with a big smile and wide eyes that gave way to an even more animated peek-a-boo.

....and then, the light turned green.

Sad that the game ended so soon, Kara waved goodbye to the little girl as both cars began to accelerate.

She patted her belly, now protruding with 7 months worth of new baby, as she grinned and said, "It's my turn! It's my turn to be a mommy soon."

My cloak, my concealer!
Enshroud my insecurities.
Protect the pretense which I put on.
Shield my face in your appearance,
that none may know my true affection.

What man should dare say
how another must spend his day?

false face of camouflage
shield me from criticism
within my clique of confidants
cover me in your facade.

To each and all his very own,
but be careful of what is sown.

haloed hood, hide me amongst
the masquerade known as society.
disguise my sins with your visor,
as a fig leaf for Eveandadam.

For all fall short of perfection,
upon the more meticulous inspection.

Let none pose a threat
to the veil which screens
my semblance to Judah
as I hide in my air of invulnerability.

dangle freely from the tree
with hideous grin of hypocrisy.

Show me a semblance
of the price to be paid.
Will it be an apple, or a life,
forty pieces of silver, or my soul?

Trust is that which when earned
Does not heat when it is burned.

Am I so blind? False colors
cover-up that which is true.
That all are in disguise for fear
of posture and the pretext
that some are more worthy.

No stone is thrown as I stand fast,
awaiting judgement for my past.

Raise the curtain, tear down the wall,
ruin my own disguisement.
Not as a pariah with nothing to lose
but as a man, just a man, nothing more.

What ever has a man to fear,
but to have none other near.
Dance with me as we sing free,
Laugh as we love unconditionally.

King is in the castle.
Write a story for him.

_____________________________

My feet step upon this aging stone night after night, and becomes my prison. Those that look up to me feel as though I have all that I need, but what I want more than anything is to be free. To walk among them and feel the warmth of their soil, their somber company, share at their table, to feel their pain, so that I might return one day and become the ruler through his people, and bare their passion for life and truly know how to fulfill their needs as people, but here I sit upon this hill and know nothing but the loneliness of a birth right and wealth they cannot imagine could bring down these walls one day...

"Ok so you got the rose...now what? I surprise her...go up to her and say something like 'this is for you'...no no 'for you' and give it to her. And then what...she is going to forgive you just like that? It is a rose for gods shakes! I should say 'I am sorry'...its honest, its sincere, she WILL have to hear me out then! Oh, I wish I was ten, riding my bike, again...then all I had to do is look somebody in the eye and they would forgive me just for being...ten!"

Without realising it...his is the next stop. He clumsily grabs the white rose, comes off the bus and replays the dialogue in his head. She is there, out in the garden, with her plants, wearing her big, silly hat...

"I'm sorry, mum! I know it's been a long time but...I' ve been busy and...this is for you..."

Skiing

She promised we’d have fun.
My best friend Olivia,
the child model with the perfect smile
and hair that flipped
perfectly over her shoulder.
She invited me on a ski trip.
She said we’d love the snow,
and I’d be as good as her.

I was thirteen years old
with braces: yellow, pink and green
elastics on metal, restraining
my adolescent buck teeth.
My mother dressed me in
my step sister’s decade-old
plum-purple snow suit.
It swished and wooshed
between my thighs,
cutting circulation off at elastic
boundaries at my ankles and wrists.

Our first ride down:
“Bunny Slope.”
Not enough for me.
Next I attempted a steeper incline:
a plumb drop towards
cabins below,
a maze of rocks and trees.
Snow plow failed,
skiis fell sliding down the hill.
There, on the ice, my kneecap popped
out of the socket—
it was an abnormal shape—
that boney sphere sitting asymmetrical
under thin blue skin.

I knew Olivia wouldn’t climb uphill
to find me.
The humiliating part was
calling out for help,
between gulps of snot and saliva:
realizing I never would be Olivia.

Dragon Tale

Suggested Prompt...

Let us write a bit of fantasy today
by using a dragon in our writing.

_______________________

"Tell me again Grandpa! How Sir Donsk froze the dragon!" Randy was fascinated by the monumental stone dragon perched on the barricade wall. Grandpa sighed, but smiled at the same time. The story was so clever and magical, he never tired of repeating it...

"All the dragons of the land, you know, are a different precious metal or stone. Because of the bronze quarries in the mountains around our little valley, the creators drew a bronze dragon from the heart of Mount Pire. It tormented the people of our valley for hundreds of years. No one knows how long a dragon lives, I've told you that. Well when my grandfather was a little boy, there was a man who came to the village named Donsk. That's all anyone ever called him. He said he knew just how to stop the dragon. In its tracks, he said. Over the years Donsk realized that the dragon always went away quickly when it started to rain, and would never go near the lake or the river. He also knew that the dragon loved to eat fish- but wouldn't go in the water to get them, and so stole them from us. He then concocted a plan to finish the dragon! In just one day he built a giant fish from paper, cloth and saplings. It was the day after the caravan from the coast had left, and Donsk had bough lots of fish. He painted each scale on his paper fish with the grease from one's he'd bought, til they shined in the sun. The dragon was sure to come, and the townspeople heard it roar from its lair, far off. They hid inside, but Donsk staid out. They heard him singing strange words, and some saw him doing a strange dance with buckets of water. It was a Rain Dance! Then the dragon arrived, but Donsk only sang louder and danced faster. The beast tried to eat the giant fake fish, but quickly realized it couldn't and set it on fire out of anger. Still Donsk did his Rain Dance. By then the dragon was perched on the wall, sniffing for something else to eat when suddenly Donsk's prayers were answered! Without warning there was an incredible downpour, and the dragon became stuck, stiff and rusted over with green rust from the rain that covers everything bronze sooner or later. Donsk of course was knighted and moved on to help other villages. That was the last that the dragon ever moved, though sometimes in droughts you might hear it start to roar. You better run to the lake then, with your biggest bucket and watch the steam rise off the Bronze Dragon when you dowse him. If you don't, you might be dowsing your barn instead."

Politics

Share your opinions, share your hopes.
An interesting day for American,
but your writing can be about any
aspect of politics you want to write about today.
(No attacking, or hatefulness, please.)

________________________

The political canvas of our nation is starting anew. No matter what side you’re on, now is not the time to judge, hold grudges or seek faults. Instead, we should rise above and endeavor to begin the next four years of our country’s history on the right foot. The one where tolerance supersedes all. The one where taking a hard look at our current situation and making the necessary sacrifices to correct it reign supreme. The one where we all—man, woman, black, white, Asian, whatever work together to shift America back to her rightful place amongst nations. The one where our hearts unite to a common goal—creating solidarity amongst her citizens.

If we keep these notions at the forefront, then as the following days, weeks and months roll into this new term, we will once again find ourselves united instead of fighting amongst ourselves. There’s already enough negativity in the world that threatens to bring nations to their knees. Let’s not allow the United States to fall victim to it. Let us stand tall, proud and linked together as we march forward into the future.

Though the name does not imply
A freeloader, a bum,
Not skinny, but plump
The epitome of nine lives.

At sunrise he bathes
On Gossamer Lane
For breakfast he's found at the Ford's
Next it's the Hudson's
For a nap in the sun
At least until he gets bored.

By lunch time he's perched
Between Oak Street and Birch
To stalk all the families there
There's the Smallwoods, the Jones,
The Lowrys and the Fatones
The Michaels, the Bards, and O'Hares.

After dinner he finds
A spot to unwind
Propped up on a tree or a fence
Then he'll sing through the night
A song of delight
Because tomorrow he'll do it again.

Carnival...

________________________

"FASTER FASTER FASTER!" screamed Dylan.
"THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!" yelled Aidan.
"SHUT UP!" shouted Molly

TORNADO shot up into the dark October sky, and the rainbow colored compartments spun out to the sides. The speed increased, satisfying Dylan's demands. The wind blew past them so hard, that Aidan's azure eyes began to water, and Molly's blonde hair fanned out behind them.

"WEEEEEE!" screamed Molly, grabbing the two boy's hands, and reaching for the sky. Dylan released the popcorn bag he had been tightly clutching in his right hand, and it was whipped out of sight, down to the lingering kids below.

TORNADO turned, and the three teenagers slid to the left. Laughing, Molly fell on to Dylan, as Aidan fell on her. They swung back up, and suddenly, Dylan was falling on Molly, while she was falling on Aidan. As the colors whipped by, Aidan pointed with his free hand, to a bunch of seventh-grade girls who were giggling at the half-full bag of popcorn that had landed on a good-looking eighth-grader's head.

Soon, they were gone from sight. The ride began to slow, and Molly, Dylan, and Aidan stumbled off, the two boys laughing as she skipped around the basketball courts, tripping over her own feet. The two boys ran after her as she bounded up the steps of a jumbo slide, and went tumbling right behind her as she went down it. All three of them landed in a tangled heap at the bottom, shaking with laughter. As they got up, Molly planted a kiss on each cheek, and pulled them after her as she ran to picnic tables set up by the food stands. The trio collapsed onto the benches, and Aidan grabbed a new bag of popcorn off the tray of a passing couple. Dylan and Molly were giggling as they dug into the warm and buttery goodness.

"Let's go," suggested Dylan, after every last piece of popcorn had been consumed.
They moved over to the field at the edge of the basketball courts, and sank down onto the grass, looking up at the black sky, light by neon lights, breathing in the smells of popcorn and an October Carnival.
