Little One

Write of the moment you held her/him for the first time.

_____________________

He was like a little ball, all swaddled up tightly into a little blanket and with that little pink and blue hat. He was peeping out at me now and then. He looked as though he wasn't sure what he'd gotten into by coming into this world. Once in a while he would whimper again and let out a little squeak. What a protest. I loved him. But not like they always would say. I wasn't overwhelmed by love at the first moment as they say. The mother's love was supposed to hit me harder and I wondered. But I just had to get to know this little person and the love grows more and more each day. My heart now "walks outside my body" the way they say it should.

Then my other boy came. He was nothing like the first. Eyes wide even minutes after birth. He had come into this world wanting to experience everything! I could see it in his eyes. They still have a hard time closing, even to sleep.

At first I didn't know how to handle the love I felt for both. I felt like my heart was physically being torn in half as one part of it slept in his crib and the other in his cradle next to me. The two pieces of myself feeling so separate. It was a new sensation.

The time healed me. Now the love for both grows. If only I could keep them. Keep them here this way forever. Keep them from the terrors of the world, from the harsh criticisms, the tragic circumstances, and the way people can be so unfair.

But I can't.

So for now I enjoy each moment of innocence. I treasure them while it lasts. And when it's time for me to let go. I must simply...let go.

"Probably both suspecting each other and keeping apart - and life so very short." (From The Tuesday Club Murders, by Agatha Christie)

***

She flipped through the last pages of the magazine before tossing it aside. The waiting room was empty. The receptionist at the desk worked quietly behind the closed glass window, her belly big - evidence of the baby she was carrying.

Mary sighed, her own possible pregnancy a long-shot at this point. At forty-four, her fertility was waning - add to it the lack of a viable father - and she felt as though she would never experience the magic of carrying her own child, the lucky pain of bringing him or her into this world, or the joy of raising and guiding a new human life on this fragile planet.

She observed the receptionist with a cruel eye. She didn't note a band on her finger. Was she also a client? Would she also carry a child that had been placed inside her through artificial means? Had her body accepted this form of reproduction? And why her? She was only a receptionist. What kind of life could she offer to a beautiful, new life, ready to be shaped, and nurtured.

Mary reached for a second magazine, throwing an angry look towards the receptionist as the young girl looked up and smiled...

***

Amy's fingers froze on her keyboard as she gazed out through the reception window. The last patient of the day, Mary Bly, shot her a dirty look. Amy wished she had Mary's life - her clothes were proof of a rich wardrobe. Oh to have that kind of money! She would not want for anything, and life would be so easy.

Amy's shoulders twitched as she looked back at her computer screen, her personal email account open:

"Dear Mom,

I know I haven't sent an email in awhile, but things haven't been going well. I know I should call, but it's easier this way. I'm pregnant, and I don't know what to do. I can barely afford to take care of my darling babies now. Please don't ask about the father. He's not going to help out either.

I don't know what to do. What do I do?"

***

"Mary?" a nurse called as she opened the door into the waiting room.

"I'm the only one here," Mary mumbled as she rose, slinging her purse over her shoulder. She walked through the door and past the receptionist, who again offered a slight smile.

"You must be one of the lucky ones," Mary said tightly as she passed.

Amy's smile faded as she pressed 'send'. "I guess," she whispered.

Politics

Share your opinions, share your hopes.
An interesting day for American,
but your writing can be about any
aspect of politics you want to write about today.
(No attacking, or hatefulness, please.)

________________________

The political canvas of our nation is starting anew. No matter what side you’re on, now is not the time to judge, hold grudges or seek faults. Instead, we should rise above and endeavor to begin the next four years of our country’s history on the right foot. The one where tolerance supersedes all. The one where taking a hard look at our current situation and making the necessary sacrifices to correct it reign supreme. The one where we all—man, woman, black, white, Asian, whatever work together to shift America back to her rightful place amongst nations. The one where our hearts unite to a common goal—creating solidarity amongst her citizens.

If we keep these notions at the forefront, then as the following days, weeks and months roll into this new term, we will once again find ourselves united instead of fighting amongst ourselves. There’s already enough negativity in the world that threatens to bring nations to their knees. Let’s not allow the United States to fall victim to it. Let us stand tall, proud and linked together as we march forward into the future.

There are some very interesting conversations going on

Jill had only a few minutes to gaze around and take in the dynamic array of colors in the umbrellas overhead before Lane walked in.

Lane. What a gorgeous, well-to-do, gregarious friend. She'd known Lane for over ten years and each year brought them closer and closer together. They thought nothing could dampen their closeness and both of them knew with great confidence their friendship could survive anything.

Lane sat down and looked at Jill with her widening smile and added a wink of the eye and said, "You better cancel your afternoon commitments now because we're in for a long haul today." Long haul was their code word way of saying there was something to share with the other that was going to go way beyond a mere lunch hour. A long haul was serious business and could only be used in dire emergencies.

Jill laughed heartily and said, "You've got to be kidding! Could you have given me a little more notice? Sheesh, girl! Ok, let me call my assistant."

Lane settled into her seat and threw her expensive handbag over the back of the chair while Jill carefully laid out rescheduling items over the phone. Lane glanced in every direction and tried to take in the myriad of guests around her while even surveying the passersby. She calculated the risk of being in such an open venue but, with much chagrin, decided there would never be a good place or a good time. Today is the day and it's been on her mind all week. It had taken up to today to find the words.

Jill closed her cell phone, dismissed the creeping feelings of guilt for last minute cancellations with clients, and turned to face her friend. Long hauls always required immediate need and urgent attention. "Lane, what's going on? What's up with the long haul?

Lane's expression quickly grew pensive, her eyes met straight on with Jill's, and she softly whispered, "Jill, it's cancer. And it's aggressive. And, um, the doctors are in agreement that curable treatment is not an option. They collectively have measured my future at just a few months."

Silence. There was only silence. Jill lost her breath as though she had been hit by a ferocious wind. All of the conversations around her melted into a dim, roaring white noise. She looked up and felt her emotions swirling like the intricate patterns of the gradient blues in the umbrella overhead.

It was going to be a long haul.

Mountain Majesty
Write of the beauty of a mountain.

This mountain is my sovereign, and while I bow and pay obeisance to her majesty, I know that I must always, always respect her, for if, in an unguarded moment, I become casual or cavalier in my attitude, she will punish me cruelly, as is her right.
