At the Airport

Write a scene that starts at the curb at an airport.

_____________________________

We met, so to say, on the internet three months ago. Two weeks after that first email, he had given me his phone number. I had nervously made that first call. We emailed numerous times a day. All day long. We'd talk on the phone in the evenings. We'd exchange late night phone calls.

But we still hadn't actually met. We had each emailed one photo, but that was it for any visual reference.

We had agreed to meet and actually set the date one week after that first call, three weeks after the emailing began.

My nerves were at their highest alert level when I stepped off the plane. I made my way to the baggage claim. I kept looking for the face from the photo, hoping to catch a glimpse of him before he spotted me.

I made my way to the curb outside the baggage claim, where we had agreed to meet. Three months. I had waited for this for three months.

I heard my name and turned. There he was, the man I had known for three months, the man I had longed to kiss and hold. The man who was on his knee, ring box open, asking me to marry him.

My life of happiness, our life filled with love, began on that curb at the airport.

the butterfly balances on my butter

unaware that i wanted it to spread

i do not shoo it away, for it
is not a nuisance.

wings like marmalade spread thin
embrace the sides of my butter dish
the mural on its wings is
appealing to the eyes as
the butter melts beneath them.

i sigh

I am a rock

______________________

I am a rock
I am born from the cauldron of heat and pressure, both of which I have withstood and vanquished in my prosperity to be here for you.
I am solid. I will not move. I will not wince. I will not duck for cover or run away at the first sign of trouble.
I do not speak, but if I could it would be to praise you not to chastise.
I stay my ground so that you may judge your position by where I lay.
I shall not waver even as nature's forces try to push me out of their way or lessen me.
You may take shelter in the lea of me. You may hold me to anchor yourself to weather any tempest.
You may use me in defence against your enemies.
I am the projectile to slay your Goliath.
You may skip me across pristine lakes for your own amusement (but it would be nice if you would dive for me and bring me back to shore).
You may singe me in your fires and use me to keep warm through the bitterest of cold nights.
You may use me to hold thngs down where you wish them to stay, so you may come back again later to find them still there.
You may chip and fracture me to use me as a tool, for I am here for you.
I am your rock and for you I will roll, no matter where you wish me to alight.
Yet, if you paint a silly face on me, I will be your pet.
Rest assure that I am your rock and will be until time erodes me away.
With love, your father.

Use the beautiful image to inspire your writing today...
a poem of a bridge, a short story about a road trip ending on the bridge,
a jumper on the side, or lovers meeting in the middle, etc... so many creative possiblities.

_________________________

I was waiting for them, from the other side; just waiting. It had been so long since I'd seen him and I could feel his presence already. I knew he was in that car and that he'd be in my arms in only a few moments.

I couldn't cross the bridge to meet him, but I wanted to. I wanted to run and grab him in my arms.

I saw their car coming and my heart began pounding so wildly, I thought I wouldn't live to see his face, to touch his cheeks with mine.

They parked the car, and I saw him climbing out. He had grown so much, more than I'd imagined.

My thoughts swept me away for a second that seemed to last an eternity until he touched my hand and pulled it to his face.

I remembered the day I had to leave him. I was going away to clean up my life, so that he might have one. Little did I know how long it would be before he'd ever see me again.

You see, I'd been in trouble that day. I found myself addicted, in jail with felony charges and with no hope of ever being the mother I knew I could be...if only...

When they drove me away, he was only eight months old. I knew he'd be safe with my own mother and that they'd need one another to get through. On the way to rehab, the car that was driving me was struck by an eighteen wheeler. I almost died without hope. In my state of unconsciousness, I was forgiven. Somehow, everything I'd ever done felt washed away and pulled out of me. I awoke in a place of freedom, I thought; until I realized that I'd never walk again.

It was okay though. Through those days of severe trial, I learned how to live and now, right now, even in this wheelchair - I finally have found freedom.

As my five year old son, took my hand in his; touching it to his face, he looked at me and said...."Momma, I love you. I missed you. Will you come home with me today?"

"Yes, Baby...I won't ever leave you again."

The Two of Them

The two of them stood and talked about their plan...

________________________

Today was the day. Mel could feel it in his bones. He told Alice as they stood at the fence waiting for their morning hay. The blue sky shimmered even though it was still early morning. From their usual vantage point they could see the man come out of the house below. He paused on the porch to scratch under his arms. Mel snorted and pawed the ground. If today was the day, then he wanted to get on with it.

Alice thought about why they were escaping. The man was kind enough, but he didn't pet them or bring them carrots, like the little boy used to, where they lived before. He just brought them food, hitched them to the plow, and expected them to pull it. He brushed them down in the evening, fed and watered them, and expected to do the same the next morning. Mel thought this was an insult to his intelligence. Besides, he missed the carrots.

Finally the man ambled off to the barn. Mel and Alice trotted over to the gate. After another long wait, the man came out of the barn carrying a hay bale on a pitchfork. He ambled over to the field gate, chuckling at the burros' impatience. "You two sure are in a hurry today." He set down his load and began to open the gate, still chuckling. "Just hold your horses," he said, chortling at his own wit. "Your food is coming."

He opened the gate and turned away to pick up the pitchfork handle again. Mel brayed and charged head down. He caught the man in the midsection and knocked him down. Mel didn't stop but kept on going, running down the hillside. Alice followed, avoiding the man struggling on the ground. They ran together towards the rising sun. Mel brayed, "I knew we could do it! Now for our old home and carrots!"

A yellow flower...

______________________

She sighed as she plucked the yellow flower gently from its stem. She continued down the path onto the palisade. It was so beautiful, no clouds, the calming sound of the waves crashing below. It could almost be something out of a summer romance movie. In fact, it almost was. This was the spot where he'd first kissed her. The only difference now was that the weather was frigid, and she was alone. When she reached the end of the palisade, she carefully climbed down to the lower part; their spot. She hadn't told anyone about it except for her best friend, a boy she had known since she was 7. She sat down on the edge, her feet dangling off the edge. The tears came slowly at first. Soon, they were gushing down her pretty face, leaving it streaked and red. She had thrown the yellow flower to her side. The chilly wind whipped her hair about her face, as she buried it in her knees that were pulled up to her chin. The muffled sobs she was emitting were barely audible over the crash of the waves. There she sat, curled up, for two hours. She was still crying when she felt a warm arm loop itself over her cold shoulders. She looked up to see her best friends face. He was holding the yellow flower in the hand that wasn't over her shoulder. He pushed back her hair, and placed the flower behind her ear, and wiped away her tears with his thumb. She smiled weakly at him, and lay her head on his shoulder. The two sat there for a long time, until eventually, and the sun was setting, a strong gust of wind blew the flower out of her hair. They watched it sail down, and land in the surf below, a small dot of yellow in the vast pool of blue and white.

Write this from first person... err... first feline...

_______________________________________

I lay in the sun and give myself a nice bath. Awe what a lovely day! Basking in the sun. So nice and warm! I lay down in the soft grass and just drink it in. I can barely keep my eyes open as I lay here. Prrr. It's the life. And none of those mini-people are around to chase me either. Prrrrr.

Hey! What's that! Hm... I saw something move over there. Ok, I'm up. I slowly creep toward the tree, eyes focused. I know I saw something there. Perhaps it was a bird. Perhaps it was a mouse! Mmm. I'll go extra slow so it doesn't scare off.

I'm just a few more feet from the tree. I'll be able to see around it any minute.

Then I hear it.
"Heeeere Kittykittykittykitty!"
I blink and turn toward the sound. Ah drat, those mini-people are back.

Ok then. Hunt's over.

I climb up the tree and curl up in it's branches to watch them jump up and try to reach me from below. At first I'm nervous and alert. Can they reach me?

No. So I settle in to watch them. Quite amusing, actually.

Johnny stepped from the tattoo shop and knew...

...that life would never, ever be the same. She had forbidden him. Plainly, and clearly, and without the gentle edge to her voice that he longed to hear. She had said it clearly:
"IF you get that tattoo of that floozy on your arm, so help me. You are no longer welcome in this house, and you should pack your stuff and get out. For good. Think hard about that!"

Johnny had thought hard about that. All the way to the tattoo parlor.

For Annie, who lives across the Water

Through the wires
And across the distance
Your love rings out to me.

The water between our countries
And the space we cannot fill
Are no barriers to the journeys
I make across the landscapes
We have created,
Forged in the certainty
That one day our lips will touch.

It is night time and the day is spent.
I lift the receiver to my ear and listen
Intently, as the soothing honey of your mellow
Voice drips its tenderness into my being.

We have waited too long for the intimate
Joining of souls split apart,
Reconnected and renewing that which was lost.
To touch your slender lips against mine,
To feel warmth of breath against my cheek,
Recognising the familiar and the unexpected,
In a second filled with perfection,
Filled with union,
To be in the moment, sensing such distillation
Of anticipated bliss…

The touch of your lips will linger
Long after the kiss is done.

The epitome of nine lives.

At sunrise he bathes
On Gossamer Lane
For breakfast he's found at the Ford's
Next it's the Hudson's
For a nap in the sun
At least until he gets bored.

By lunch time he's perched
Between Oak Street and Birch
To stalk all the families there
There's the Smallwoods, the Jones,
The Lowrys and the Fatones
The Michaels, the Bards, and O'Hares.

After dinner he finds

Then he'll sing through the night
A song of delight

big black bird
when i first saw you
you were very big
i fed you crunbs
from my cookie
i was delighted to see you

i next saw you picking at something
on the asphalt
i wondered what it was
you minded the cars
as they drove by
jumping away
waiting
and coming back
as each one passed

then i saw you in the big field
where stones grow
with names carved into them
some standing straight
some askew
i was crying that day
and you cocked your head
inquistively
then you raised your great black wings
and flapped noiselessly
away

today
you have come
again
to me
it seems to be the day
you are a beautiful bird...
noiselessly
you landed
in my garden
i didnt see you until i looked up
your head cocked to the side
inquisitively

its no matter
at all

As I ponder the beauty of this one dandelion, my mind wanders to another place when the little girl once sat in the field full of dandelions.

The beautiful yellow dandelions brought warmth to her heart and tickled her little bare toes. She stood up and began twirling around with her hands reached high into the sky and her eyes closed. She could feel the sunshine on her face.

The little girl was thanking God for making such a beautiful world for her to live in. As she opened her eyes, she saw what she thought were fairies flying around her. Just as she became lost in her imagination, she stumbled and fell to the ground.

Sitting on the ground once again, her eyes focused on the fluffy little something by her foot. She touched it and it burst with fluff's being carried by the wind. It was then that she realized that there weren't any fairies.

The little girl became sad and she thought for a moment about God and his beautiful world. Suddenly she felt alone in her thoughts and decided to challenge her belief that God was real. Just then, she picked one of the fluffy little dandelions, filled her mouth with air and blew. She wished that she could just know that God was real and that He loved her.

As the little girl watched the fluff's flying into the sky above her, she felt something touch her leg. She quickly looked down and found a bunny leaping into her arms. He touched his nose to hers and it tickled. It was then the little girl's heart filled with truth. She knew in her heart that God loved her.

See, only God could know how much she loved bunnies....because she had never told anyone, not even her mommy.
