______________

Behind you the tsunami rises
Before you the tornado of evil
The smoke of success trails
from your wings--
Soar!

Harris soared the warm thermal air currents, rising higher into the air. She watched him from the branches of a dead tree, pretending to preen. Harris twitched his wings and tumbled, performing effortless loop de loops. he stretched his claws and grasped at imaginary prey. He folded his wings and dived, driving away invisible predatos. She hid her head under her wing. Harris spread his wings again, climbing higher so that he could repeat the performance. Perhaps she would watch the second time. He twitched his long primary feathers, but he misjudged and or a second the warm updraft was no longer pushing him upwards. He dropped out of the sky, rolling downwards before he could recover and right himself. He looked towards the dead tree, hoping she hadn't seen. Her head was cocked on one side, her yellow eyes glinting. Harris wanted to squawk in annoyance. He turned to fly away. She spread her wings and took to he air, floating effortlessly towards him. 'Nice flying,' she said. Harris beat his wings and tried to look non chalant. 'You ain't seen nothing yet.'

Inkpot, I guess Harry is a good name for this handsome hawk, and impressing the ladies just comes naturally to him. My camera caught him in the act (he may not have been hunting prey for food after all), but your words transformed him into a lofty lothario! I think he likes that image! Look at him soar!

Free
Free falling
Not at all like the song.

Controlled falling.
Master of the sky
Rules with his wings

Makes you obey with awe.
When you see him falling
Up against the blue.

With flapping dreams
I soar like the eagles;
The instance of me preyed
lurks behind reality.
A mounting contempt
blinds my eyes
That high as my pride
could take me,
Repercussions send
me diving low.

Wow Wildspirit, what an amazing photo. Thank you for taking this beautful image and sharing it with us. I love hawks and I would love to have seen him in his natural habitat, but this is just as good. :) I'm glad he likes his lothario image. I've had the honour of seeing hawks mating dances a couple of times and as soon as I saw the photo I thought of them.

How free the wind
How big the sky
Opens the spirits
Of this bird and I

To watch her soar
To see her glide
Catches my breath
Makes me want more

Spread my sights
Spread my wings
Bring new visions
My soul new heights

floating on the

rise above and

heartbeat

there she is
scurrying
through the tall grasses
trying in vain
not
to be seen

waiting
I approach
on silent wings
not so much as a
feather
flapping in the breeze

she
darts from
the gnarly stump
into the
unprotected grassland

I
strike swiftly and stealthily

dinner is served

I was lucky enough to get the photo, and more than lucky enough to have met Laura a while back, and now all the wonderful people who have written such beautiful tributes to the majestic hawk. This is a redtailed hawk--there are plenty of them in the Hemet valley, but Harris is undoubtedly the most famous now.
