S/he was a fat cat...

Kojak was a fat cat, a former street fighting tom. Rescued from the street by my grandparents and named after the TV hero, he came to live with us when my grandparents could no longer care for him.

Despite weighing more than any cat had a right to weigh, he had lost none of his fighting technique. Within days of moving in with us, he had vanquished the vicious tom from across the street, who had tormented and terrorized our pair of cuddly cats for years.

Once, a pet show was held near our home with a prize for fattest cat. We took Kojak, and waited while other fat cats were weighed in the arms of the brave volunteer (he stood on the scale and held the cats, and his weight was subtracted from the total weight). At last it was Kojak's turn. The scale went up, and up, and up. Kojak was Fattest Cat with a blue ribbon!

Her head looked disproportionate from the rest of her body. It seemed so small. But no, her body was just big.

She would run down the hall with a thump, thump, thump every time my sister screamed for help when she spotted a mouse. Her belly would swing back and forth beneath her and she would pounce, always narrowly missing the rodent as it dashed away.

This was our cat. This was my cat.

I'll never forget the way she loved to come sit on my lap when I was trying to do my homework. Or the way she would always come put me to bed. But everyone said she slept with them at night. Because she always put everyone to bed. She was that kind of cat.

I remember waking up one morning because I found I couldn't breath. It's because she was sleeping on my chest. Once my sister woke up to find her sleeping on her face! That was a moment she never would forget.

We'll never forget our cat.

She was a fat cat.

If Queen Feline could speak, I'm sure she would not refer to herself as a fat cat. Wakings from her fifth nap of the day, the Queen would remind all who were graced to be in her presence that she "allows us to delight in her ample fluffiness".

Singing to Cats
(a vignette)

You are my sunshine, my only--
OW! Why did you scratch Mommy??
Sunshine. You make me happy, when skies are--
OW!! Stop it, Sugar Plum! We're not playing, we're singing!
Ahem. Gray. You'll never--
Where are you going?
Sug?
Sug?

Fluffy bundle,
Lying there,
Where'd you get that tummy?

I took a leaf
from Winnie the Pooh
and ate up all the hunny!

She was a fat cat, whom her friends called plump.

She was a fat cat, far cuter than a button.

She was a fat cat, content with a rug and a little love.

She was a fat cat, and she was a happy cat.
