At the Beach

Suggested Prompt...

Write this scene from one of their perspectives.
The child, the man, or... perhaps the ocean.

"I looked out over the ocean and couldn't even see any land at all, mommy." said the little girl, "Daddy held my hand so tight. He said that he didn't want the waves to grab me up and pull me in."

"That's right, honey." Daddy said.

"Know what happened, mommy?" said the little girl. {I knew what happened, I took the picture - but I had to pose for the excitement in her face...she wanted to tell the story}

Giggling and trying hard to tell the story, the little girl proceeded with..."Then we stepped into the water and the waves pulled daddy in and grabbed him up. Mommy, he was still holding my hand {giggling} and he was laying in the water up to his head. I was standing strong, mommy. I was taking care of daddy."

On the way home, I begged for daddy to stop at the little snack shack for french fries. He asked me if I would pay him back the $3.?? and I said yes. Many, many years he's asked for his $3.??'s.

~Seeing this picture reminded me of the day my daddy took me trout fishing; just daddy and his little girl. Yes, this was a true to life story of mine; with the exception that my mom was not there to take a photo and there were no waves, just a few slippery rocks and some pretty chilly water. I only have the photo in my mind of that day {and I giggle} because I do remember it so vividly. My dad was 6'7 in his day...I was just a wee little 5 yr old girl in comparison. What a grand moment in time it was. It still brings me a feeling of strength.

"This is the Big ocean, little one. it can be serene, deep blue, or stormy, grey and dangerous. Watch out for big waves and don't go too close. Men Have called it "The Cruel Sea" -- they have riskec their lives on it, for warfare, for exploring, for trade. Way acroos there, somewhere, is Australia, America, China. It took cneturies to find all these spotgs in the ocean, now we can fly over it with ease, in hours. One day we'll go on an easier journey than Cook or Drake had, in a big safe Boeing. Meantime, let's get our bathing suits on, it's a good day for a swim, hey?"

[Made it in 5 min!!] Greetings.

I sent my dad a copy of my story and he emailed me back asking why I didn't tell the rest of the story....

Thank you Laura Jayne for inspiring this piece. It made my dad's heart smile again :o).

Oh...and I am truly honored to have been blessed with the award for my story of Martha & William's beginning. I love these two little elephants, they're adorable!

~with a happy heart smiling, Heather
