...Snake
Write a description, story or a poem, but not of fear or loathing,
but rather of the exquisite beauty of this animal.

The Snake

Forked tongue, stoic face,
Flicker, flicker, flicker.

Steely eyes survey its space
Flicker, flicker, flicker.

Tension coiled for a chase
Flicker, flicker, flicker.

Threatening deadly embrace
Flicker, flicker, flicker.

Sinuous moves, unctuous grace
Flicker, flicker, flicker.

Oils away without a trace
Flicker, flicker, flicker.

One week after the photo or picture is posted I will pick one offering to put beneath the image. This is a way of celebrating exceptional creativity. The snake looked cold and rough. I was surprised how warm and silky smooth his scales were when I picked him up. The light reflected off his body, shimmering across the multi faceted colours. Black revealed itself to be a mixture of purple and navy. Red smouldered orange and crimson. Even the white bands between the two colours glittered with pearl. I marvelled at the movement of the snake as he coiled around my fingers. Such grace - and this from a creature without any limbs. He raised his diamond shaped head and looked at me, tasting the air with his tiny flame tongue. I looked into his glittering eyes and saw within them a conciousness deep, alien and long misunderstood.

Not a minute left for writing, this morning but I HAD to comment. My first reaction to the pic. was "AAAAHHHHH"; then I saw your prompt...and it turned into "hahahaha" (at myself).

No fancy words but I absolutely love the black and white striped tip of his tale. Okay, maybe a quick try:

My snake cinquain:

Snake
Coiling Scales
Quickly Finds Prey
Hunger Quenched by Desire
Reptile

~I don't know. It's finished.

Inkpot, once again...very nice writing. Too funny though; every time I write (here)...I jump in without reading anyone else's because I want to be fresh for the write.

When I'm finished, I read the other writings and am amazed at how often a word or two are the same...or even the message in the writing. Isn't that something? The ways that our human minds think alike at times? Such a creation; are we.

It reigns on the ground, not making a sound. Knowing its strength, breath by breath. Beautiful stripes with a rattle at its end. I wish I could be its friend.

I am a snake, psssttt, scared yet? Ha ha, its amazing how people think ‘I’ of all slitherers is a scary one. Let me tell you soemthing - I am wonderful and very gorgeous! I have soft supple skin, OKK, scales if you insist, but they are still soft and lovely. Come hither you. Touch me. I’ll give you a lick.

And when you’re looking to get a tickle, I’ll be there, I promise, I’ll walk over you slowly but surely, I have perfected the art of providing the perfect tickle. Invite me, I’ll come.

I have to go now, it is Friday, and I’m ready for my sun tan.

Thanks Heather. It is weird how similar different entries are, isn't it? I guess there is something in the picture or prompt that sparks off a shared consciousness or something.:)

Thanks Shabby Girl.

In India, they called you Nagas, masters of the underworld. In Western tradition, you were the devil's advocate, tempting all with your seductive tones and undeniable offers. The Aztecs worshipped you, as the god Quetzalcoatl. For the Aztecs, snakes were already of the earth and the water. So they gave Quetzalcoatl flaming wings, introducing wind and fire so that it was composed of all four elements. Something perfectly balanced and worthy of worship. No one should hate snakes just as no one should hate anything. People fear you because you are different and potentially deadly. But everyone forgets that there is usually a warning, a head lowered into striking position or the frantic clicking of a rattling tail. And that's a lot more warning than most missles offer as they drop out of the sky. You are cold-blooded, but at least you own up to it and never bat an eye.

This is beautifully said KW.

Blending in, you surprise me. I watch as your graceful curves move you away from me, your elegance barely hidden by the grass, ignored by society.

We are often misunderstood, you most of all.

We are often afraid, you more of me, than I of you.
