This time of year always brings back memories of my mother's kitchen. The aroma would drift into my bedroom a couple of days before Christmas. It was the tart, crisp smell of orange mixed with cinnamon and chocolate. It was time for orange peels coated in chocolate and smothered with sugar crystals and cinnamon. Mom could have made these throughout the year but it was known in our house that they were only made at Christmas. We all have our traditions but still today the brief passing of a spice shop transports me back to my mom's kitchen and the anticipation we all felt that accompanied the smell of cinnamon, orange and chocolate. Spices were the gold of the ancient world, to me the smell and taste of cinnamon is worth more than gold.

Thyme. The first time I tried thyme, it was exotic to my tongue. I didn't like it but I never forgot the twist in it. Now, every time I try something with thyme, I'd recognize that it is my favorite spice of all-time. Well, one of my favorites, that is. I enjoy the tickle it gives my tongue. Do you like thyme?

Keith got there late so Mike began to fill him in. "We have to find her within three hours or...." Mike said and let the unsaid scream.

"Okay," Keith said, nodding, "Where was she last seen again?"

"Her mother said she went to the grocery store to get milk for the baby. After that, nothing for a day and a half. Then, the ransom note this morning with the fingertip and deadline," Mike said.

"Enemies?" Keith asked.

"This is a bad neighbohood. Most of her ex-boyfriends are ex-cons as well. It's long list but we've checked them all. Nothing," Mike said.

"Then we start from the top again. We'll beat on doors until we can find this Clara or until it's time to make the drop. I'll get SWAT on location over there." Keith said and grabbed for his walkie-talkie.

"There's another thing her mom said. She doesn't go by Clara much anymore," Mike said.

"So what are we calling her?" Keith asked.

"She goes by the name Cinnamaon," Mike said.

"Is that it?" Keith asked, posed to press a button and contact dispatch.

"Or Cin," Mike said.

A little spice is what I was looking for. My life seemed so dull lately.

I stopped into the Spice Rack to ponder the peppers. Maybe that would help.

I couldn't help overhearing a middle-aged woman asking for help with spices for her spaghetti sauce. She was wanting to improve an old family recipe.

Well, one thing led to another and a year and a half later my life really got spiced up: I married that lady! She's one spicy Italian.

When I was a child, salt was the only spice I knew.

As I slipped into my 20s, pepper was entered into the mix.

Now, in my 30s, and after stepping outside my box of basic recipes, I have over 50 different spices strewn throughout my kitchen.

Everything tastes better with a little touch of cayenne!

Aisle no. 5

She needed some spices
The dead bird had to be smeared

She walked through the aisle
To pick up some cumin

He was standing right there
With an aura that screamed ‘bad boy’

Her past was filled with the nice ones
And yet she had no story to tell

Her mouth blurted out her thought
‘I think I fancy something new today’

‘How about some cumin?’ he said
And they walked together to the cashier
