big black bird
when i first saw you
you were very big
i fed you crunbs
from my cookie
i was delighted to see you

i next saw you picking at something
on the asphalt
i wondered what it was
you minded the cars
as they drove by
jumping away
waiting
and coming back
as each one passed

then i saw you in the big field
where stones grow
with names carved into them
some standing straight
some askew
i was crying that day
and you cocked your head
inquistively
then you raised your great black wings
and flapped noiselessly
away

today
you have come
again
to me
it seems to be the day
you are a beautiful bird...
noiselessly
you landed
in my garden
i didnt see you until i looked up
your head cocked to the side
inquisitively

its no matter
at all

"Halleluiah! Our God will provide!"

From The Message (Luke 12:24):
He continued this subject with his disciples. "Don't fuss about what's on the table at mealtimes or if the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your inner life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. Look at the RAVENS, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, carefree in the care of God. AND YOU COUNT FAR MORE.

"Amen"

He was the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes ... a dark silhouette against a beautiful, bright, blue sky. He was a black crow, a symbol of doom to some, sitting in the shadows of our home.

It was going to be a bad day ... I just knew it.

I lay there for a moment and stared at his ugliness ... the shape of his beak, the curve of his horrid little head, and the threatening up-lift of his wings.

An impending sense of dread came over me as I crawled out of bed, went to the window and yelled, "SCAT" and slapped my hand against the window.

The dark figure raised his wings, took a gentle hop, and lifted himself into the brilliant sky above. My eyes widened as he flew up into the the brightness of mornings light, for it was at that moment I realized that he wasn't a crow at all, but a lovely snowy white dove, now vanishing into the safety of nearby trees.

... my day was only starting ...

Something big is happening
I can feel it in the sky

Something’s about to change
I’m really not sure why

Something good is happening
I can feel it when I fly

Hello--I'm new here!
My attempt at this prompt:

Crow

he appears as one
then two
calling
shifting

he becomes she flying faster
than I drive roosting
on rooftops preening
showing fine feathers
strutting and two
becomes three

calling
shifting

he catches my eye
cawing and
words become colors
I could hear if I see
my life will change

calling
shifting

I could see
if I listen

Simon

He followed me wherever I went.
He watched as I walked past his house.
He didn’t like anyone who came by on his street. Especially me.

He waited.

I was cold.
I was small.
I was eight years old.
I dreaded that this was the only path I knew.

I was alone.

Snow crunched under my boots.
Trees stood in somber testament.
I made my careful approach.

(Almost home.)
Just one more corner.
(Almost home.)
I could see his house.
(Almost home.)
I couldn’t see him.
(Almost home.)
I knew he was there.
(Almost home.)
Don’t look up, I thought.

Then
he attacked.

He came out of nowhere. Suddenly.
He hovered over me. Ominously.
He shrieked.
I screamed.
He swooped down on me.
He grabbed at my hat.
He wouldn’t let go.

I covered my eyes but
His darkness enveloped me.
I covered my ears but
His voice sent shivers down my spine.
His eyes were tiny dots of dark.
Unfeeling.
Unblinking.
He poked me.
He pummeled me.
He would not let me go.

Rescued
By the one
Who heard my cries.
Mother-angel scaring
Simon
The crow
Away
From alighting on my head
Pecking at the green and gold yarn ball
On the top of my hat.
Shaken.
Crying.
Timid.

Simon will bother me no more.

P.S. I was a bit apprehensive to write this poem and it took me way longer than 5 minutes! This is a true story…I was attacked by a crow named Simon who was harbored as a wild-pet at some neighbors around the corner. He would dive-bomb anyone who walked past each day, and this particular snowy day in February I was all alone down the only street that I was allowed to walk home from school. To this day, the sight of a crow or the piercing caw will send a shiver down my spine! Needless to say, I have never watched The Birds!

Under the guise of darkness, his ever watchful eye caught that which no others did. He watched them come and go, from the wee hours of the night and well into the dawn. Their stealthy endeavors did not escape his detection. He observed their animated grins of anticipation upon their arrival. As they departed spent, satisfied and invigorated, their illuminated countenances foreshadowed their return.
