Beyond the porch
Which marked the border
Of our independent state
Of being,
You carried me once,
Out of daydreams
And into my hopes,
Where languidly we would sit
And marvel at the stars,
'I wonder,' you used to say,
'If they can see the brilliance of our love
Shining out to them
Through the darkness?"
~ Sacha van Straten

I met him again today or did I? The well known doctor is today an alzeimher patient. He adjsuted his chair to get it exactly perpendicular to the porch. The disease had killed his memory but had not killed an innate attribute - perfection. He stared at me with the look that said " who are you?" I told him grandpa "Do you like it here? Do you want to come to Pune with us? I spoke to him even though I knew he would not reply. He had stopped communicating for more than a year. He got up from his chair devoid of all emotion almost as if he had not heard me and stepped into the garden. I followed him knowing it was twilight and it would get dark soon.
It is inviting.
A moment
to sit a while
and
catch my breath.
Allowing
silence to take over.
And, I
just breathe.
Wow! I love both the poem and the story. With your help, I've seen aspects of the photo that I couldn't experience before.
Thanks,
Dan Felstead
Dan, this is a gorgeous photo. I love the buttery light from the windows; it reminds of autumn light. And the indigo light outside juxtaposed with the window light--just wonderful. There are particular types of people who would long to be inside, in the warmth, in the light... and those of us who would relish staying outside in the twilight.... Thanks for sharing this!

I love Sacha's comment. It is always interesting to me when a question is posed...that truly invites a response from the reader and that is the reaction I felt...being drawn in to Sacha's world for a brief moment of time. Thanks for inviting me along on the trip!
Hi Dan,
I'm so pleased you liked my poem, as much a I enjoyed looking into your photograph.
I can't tell you how the poetry process works for me with any great certainty, only that it happens quickly and the words tumble out onto the screen faster than I can keep track of them.
I thought your picture hinted at unknown possibilities, and as I contemplated that I let myself be drawn to a place where the power of enduring love might equal the warming light wafting through the windows in your photo.
As I was writing about that I suppose it struck me that it might be an interesting twist to imagine the stars watching the twinkles from our existence, as an opposition to what we normally assume. My home is in a small village in the French Loire Valley, where the street lights are off by 10PM, so the night sky in summer is bursting with starlight. It's one of my favourite pastimes, to sit out on a warm night and gaze upwards. I guess those times, which are peaceful, contemplative and happy for me, were buzzing around somewhere while I was penning the verse.
The poem in its entirety took somewhere around 3-4 minutes to write. No more. No corrections. From brain to screen to you.
I don't know if this is useful, as I'm not in the habit of trying to explain the process, but I know being a landscape photographer (with my other hat on) that I'm always curious about ISO settings, shutter speeds, and aperture selections on pictures I admire.
It's interesting, actually, writing prose after the event. I hope it's of some use to you.
With kind regards,
Sacha
Sitting Pretty
Behind the fence
we safely sit
up high above the walk.
Mother looks straight out
while I avoid the looks
of passers by.
Our porch, our sanctuary,
our comfortable cage,
where we sit,
Perched above the common folk.

i just want to share my experience and testimony here.. i was married for 4 years to my husband and all of a sudden, another woman came into the picture.. he started hailing me and he was abusive..but i still loved him with all my heart and wanted him at all cost…then he filed for divorce..my whole life was turning apart and i didn't know what to do..he moved out of the house and abandoned the kids.. so someone told me about trying spiritual means to get my husband back and introduced me to a spell caster…so i decided to try it reluctantly..although i didn't believe in all those things… then when he did the special prayers and spell, after 2days, my husband came back and was pleading..he had realized his mistakes..i just couldn't believe it.. anyways we are back together now and we are happy..in case anyone needs this man, his email address olotospellhome@yahoo.com his spells is for a better life. again his email is olotospellhome@yahoo.com
