Gargoyle

Suggested prompt...

He has seen quite a bit up there... tell me one of his stories.

__________________________

“You know, everybody thinks there's lots of exciting things to see up on a building, but really there's not. I mean, people walk by, sure, but after the first week or so, maybe the first year, you've really seen it all. Everything after that is just variations on the same behavior. People really aren't that interesting. But they're better than the pigeons.” He paused to take a swallow of beer.

The bartender nodded sympathetically as he polished a glass. “Tell me about it, brother.”

“Well, I will tell you about it. The pigeons just eat and sleep, and when they're not doing that, they're making droppings on my head. At least people don't do that.” He paused again. The bartender bent down for another glass. “But there was this one time.”

This time, the pause was expectant. The bartender looked up. This was different. The gargoyle came in about once a week, when the bar was empty, always moaning about the boring life up on the corner of the church. Not once had he ever hinted at something odd he had seen. Maybe it was the extra beer he had had tonight. The gargoyle seemed satisfied with the bartender's response, and continued.

“Yeah, one night I was sitting up there, and all of a sudden the manhole cover in the middle of the street started clanking and then it lifted up. I could see hands holding it up, and a man's head appeared underneath. I heard, 'Ah, no, man, this ain't the bank.' The head disappeared, and the cover clanked down, and in the morning the bank was all in an uproar. All the money had been stolen from the vault in the night, and there was no trace of the theives. I've never seen anything like it before or since.” He lifted his mug and drained the beer. He stood up. “I better get back before morning. Thanks, pal.” He turned to the door of the bar.

“Wait!” The bartender had never stopped the gargoyle before, but he had to know.

The gargoyle turned back in the doorway. “Yes?” Somehow it had an ominous sound, and the bartender wondered if this was such a good idea. He asked his question anyway.

“Why didn't you report what you'd seen?”

The gargoyle laughed. “Me? Report it? Who would listen? No one thinks I'm alive besides you. You're the only one in the whole town, and I'm lucky you take payment for beer in dead pigeons. Me? Report it?” He went out the door, chuckling.

Twilight

______________________

Twilight arrives like a rapid train tonight. Plans to create my space have to be pushed until the first light. Why did I allow this day to slip on by? Am I that little girl again, fearful to take on a new challenge? Maybe I'm glad that twilight has arrived. I'm walking on a tight rope and too afraid to look down. Twilight wraps me up in my comfort zone. The creative me has to speak before the next twilight descends.

Consider what she is thinking in this moment.
Use that creatively to offer a poem or short story today.

____________________

The lovely bride with everything so perfect. The perfect dress and veil. Hair and makeup. Palm tree setting. Perfect weather. The handsome groom who loved her more than she could have ever dreamed possible.

Tom loved her for who she was. She didn't have to be anyone else with him. He had loved her from the very first moment. She could never do wrong in Tom's eyes.

But today was all wrong. Lisa was about to walk down the aisle to marry the man who would be with her forever. But she didn't love him. She tried so hard to love him as he deserved to be loved.

Instead, she loved a coworker. Married with a family, Phil was her former lover. He had called it off once Tom proposed. He had made Lisa say Yes. His wife helped Lisa plan the wedding. And all the while, Lisa wanted Phil. She would always want him. She would always love him. She loved him for so many reasons.

She couldn't walk down the aisle. She shouldn't walk down the aisle. But if she walked down the aisle, would that make Phil and Lisa on the same page? Would they be able to resume their relationship? Both on equal ground, both married. Would he take her back? Would he love her again? He didn't want her now, but ....

Only one way to find out. The violins are playing. The doors open, and she takes her first step.

Include a roller coaster in your writing today.

____________________

"Take a letter, Maria. Address it to my wife. Say I won't be coming home, got to start a new life."

"Yes sir."

Maria's hand hovered above the parchment for a lengthy sigh. She could not decide the best way to end things for Senor Lopez and Cecelia. She was, after all, Senora Lopez' sister. They had so many happy memories together - ah! With that, she wrote.

Dearest Hermana,

Do you remember when we were so very young and a couple of alborotadoras getting in constant danger? Well, I do. I remember that one summer we snuck into the fair to ride the rollercoaster because we were too pequena to ride? We were, what, five and seven? Ah, mi amor, we did not know that to run teh ride we needed someone else and so we took turns. You, being mi mejor hermana you got to go first and I pulled up a box and pressed that big green button and you flew so fast. Do you remember?

I was crying because I thought I would never see you again. Dios mio, I thought I had killed you and lost you forever. But then that train pulled back in and you were so red and so smiling, un grande grin indeed! I asked you how it was but the flashlights and the guarddogs came and they chased us from the park and you couldn't tell me until after we were safe in bed.

And you whispered to me, so suave and soothing and you told me how you were so scared at first. But the excitement at the top looking down on the whole world was too much and you felt like your entire heart would burst and scream from you. A mi corazon beat so fast too then in jealousy and joy.

Do you remember then, my sister, mi amor, ten years later when you first fell in love with Carlos? You told me in teh same hushed whispers what that first kiss was like. And when you were married five years later you described your beating heart in the same fashion. Ah my dear, I again, I was always so jealous of you. And now, I am afraid to tell you the truth of this monstruo verde in my heart.

But it is my turn to ride the train, and Carlos wants to sit with me.

Tristamenta Yours,
Maria

The inner woman...

___________________________

THE INNER ME

My inner woman has done got up and gone
She tripped and ran fast as she could
Not a word, a poem, or even a little song
She only did what she thought she should

My inner me is buried deep
Afraid to come out or even to see
She has so many ideas she would love to keep
But she's afraid of life and the collective we

My inner self is bruised and torn
Grief stricken and fragile, threatening to break
But it's time to move on and no more to mourn
Even if my actions feel like a fake

My inner drive must suck it up
Stop wallowing in pain, start enjoying my life
Quit dragging my ass through the layers of muck
Cut this pain away with the blade of my knife

My inner id is a beautiful thing
When I allow her a chance to breathe
She is filled with life, almost bursting to sing
I think she'll stick around if I only believe

Suggested Prompt -

Why are they meeting tonight?
Use that creatively to inspire your writing today.

_____________________

They met on the internet months ago. They had already talked about everything under the sun, but tonight they will finally meet in person.

Her friends advised against a nice dinner and told her that they should only meet for coffee. But she knew him, she knew all about him. She felt safe with their plans, and she wanted this dinner more than anything.

They sat in the fine establishment ... beautiful artwork on the walls, amazing ambience, divine food ... but all they noticed was each other. Their conversation flowed freely, and he even reached across the table and held her hand. Her heart melted. The evening was better than she could have ever imagined.

The faint music in the background inspired him. He stood and took her hand. Standing there by their table, they danced their first dance. People all around stopped and admired them, these two people lost in each other, unaware of their surroundings.

Unaware that his wife was walking across the room towards them.

Bowling

Suggested Prompt...
~
Here is a fun image...
now find a creative way to use it in your writing today.

__________________

I think I was all of ten years old when I found freedom in the bowling alley....

My friend, the one that grew up right next door to me, joined the local bowling team and asked me if I could come along with her one Saturday morning. I was surprised when my mother said that I could go.

Stepping foot into that place was a new world for me. I went and watched my friend bowl. I continued to go because I loved the freedom of being there without my mom or dad. I could be in an adult environment, feel like my own person, just for a little while each Saturday morning. That is why I wanted to go, until....

...the day that I actually slipped my fingers into a ball, stood steadily contemplating the right swing of my arm and positioning of my body. I took a few single steps and let her go, right down the center and blowing over the pins. I felt a whole entire new feeling...a feeling of control, of accomplishment and surety.

The next season of Saturday bowling came along and guess who signed up for a team? It was me, with my very own bowling ball, even. I think my mom could see the need I had inside for this little bit of freedom and self control. She found a ball at a yard sale, had it fitted perfectly for me and when it returned to me, my initials were also carved into it.

I was on the local Saturday morning bowling team for a few years, until the next stage of life became apparent....boys.

James used to be a security guard until he was laid off of work 3 months ago. His wife gave birth to a beautiful healthy baby boy. Their first child.

James looks into his beautiful son's eyes and knows what he needs to do. He knows his family cannot sustain themselves with the meager unemployment checks he receives.

James wears his black tank top that has the words "Security" on the front. He takes his resumee and some business cards.

James walks the street and hands out his resumee and his card at every shop, restaurant, and business. He lets them know that he would be a great security guard for their business.

So far, no one is looking for a security guard. But that doesn't stop James. He has a little boy and a wife to take care of, and that thought keeps him going.

Waiting for the Call

He/she said he/she would call.

____________________

He’s wonderful,
He’s sweet.
For a little while.
He makes you fall in love with him,
Then leaves without a word.
A hug,
A kiss, or perhaps
Just a goodbye.
So full of promise.
You forget for a while,
Everything but that goodbye.
And it is a while before you realize
That you have not heard from him
But it’s okay,
Because the memory
Of that one hug alone
Is enough to make you happy.
Then after a few more days,
You want more.
But that’s okay too,
Because he promises to call.
He says he wants to see you again.
So you wait
Patiently,
With stars in your eyes.
Perhaps he is too busy,
Perhaps it has just slipped is mind,
Perhaps he is too shy.
(Oh folly!
What a thought!)
So you drop him note,
It sounds nonchalant,
But it is sent
With all your heart.
And you wait.
And you wait.
Nothing.

And so it seems that I
Am merely a fool.

Really take a look at this dark window looking out to the light.
Use this image creatively in your writing today.
Something about a distorted view, about frost, about light and dark,
or any other way it inspires. It is all yours to open your imagination with today.

____________

I was back in the house of my grandmother. She had passed away and now I was back inside the house I remembered from that winter we were snowed in. I sat by the window again, remembering what I had thought back then:

'Snowed in? Dang it! What could I do trapped in this dark house with nobody but my grandmother. She's so boring!' I had wanted to spend these couple weeks with my friends in the neighborhood. My parents were off at a conference and my brother had gone to California to visit Aunt Jemma.

I had looked over the crystallized snow stuck to the window to see the snow-covered trees outside and I'd sighed thinking, 'How long will this last anyway? How long does it take for this much snow to melt away from our doors and windows? We definitely had enough food for the next decade if we needed it.' I rolled my eyes. 'Or for the next century. Grandma collected canned foods like my little brother collected rocks.'

The day was going by so slowly! I was sure my brother was having a blast in California with Aunt Jemma. Why had I thought this would be more fun?

I remembered it so well. It was late afternoon and I still hadn't done anything but read a boring book from off Grandma's shelves.

"Katie? Come here for a minute."

I walked in to Grandma's room to see a bunch of old photo albums open and scattered. Grandma was holding two photographs. She gestured for me to come sit next to her. When I did, I noticed the photos in her hands were of a beautiful young woman dressed up like a model. I asked her who it was and she responded.

"Me."

The rest of the afternoon and following days were filled with more than I could have imagined. Grandma told me stories about modeling in her younger days. She dressed me up in her old vintage costumes for modeling. We had our own little photo shoots. We laughed and talked about her younger times. I never knew what an interesting person my grandmother was.

I will never forget those couple weeks spent with my grandmother in the darkened house covered with snow. Now I gather the albums and costumes that she had left to me. They will also remind me that anything is possible.

R - Sunday's Alphabet Prompt

Suggested prompt...

R is for Rescue, use the word rescue in your writing today.

_______________

Vasco dressed by moonlight, lashing buckles and cords in lopsided knots with hasty yanks and tugs. He had no need to look presentable, just the need to flee, to run, to get to her side.

Flora needed him. He knew it. He could feel it. His blood was on fire. Every fiber of his flesh was screaming, reaching for her.
The horse was too slow. Dragging. Even as the trees zoomed past and the forest gave way to sand and the sand met the sea he felt hours dropping past impatiently.

There was no time. Never enough time. He knew she was dying. There was too much blood on that armor. Too much to leave any for her.

Flora. He stopped, jerking the reigns, leaping, running, falling in the surf to cradle her.

'I'm here to rescue you my love. Please, please wake up.'

But she would not stir and she would not answer and he knew, he knew, he was too late but he refused to know. And the horse was too slow again. And the buckles were pulled and fastened in haste. And his bride was lashed lopsided and carelessly to the rear of his mount.

And he looked to the sun, to the setting moon, and he rode as hard as he could across the waves until he could swallow no more of world's tears. And he choked and coughed and drowned in the salt brine of his pain.

Just as she opened her eyes.

He/She is on that boat coming to you.

Gemma had never been the patient one, but she was willing to wait for this. But the boat kept steady on its course, straight for the dock and all she knew was that she was waiting for a boy named Dominic Vreeland. "About your age." Her mother had said distractedly. Gemma didn't know how she would explain to Alex that her mother, his suppoused aunt, wasn't there to greet him. She wondered if he had known about her -Gemma- known that he'd had a cousin for the past 18 years. Gemma hadn't. She didn't even know that her mother had other family until a few days before.

The boat was near enough now that she could see the faces of some of the dozen or so passangers. She didn't know what to think- that she would know him in one glance? People started to file onto the dock around her, and there was only one boy her age. He looked normal to her, though he was travel worn and clearly exhausted, hardly able to hold on to his small suitcase. "Dominic?" She said and stepped right up to him, deciding to get it over with. He looked at her through a fog and then much to her surprise, smilied and said, "Hi, Gem."

Include a watch in your writing today.

_____________

Old watches hold entire lives within their tarnished gold casings. Days and days...both good and bad have been lived by the ticking of time.

The old watch was first held nervously when it slowly ticked towards the time to meet Erica's dad for the first time. That same watch guided me through the waiting room until I heard my daughters voice for the first time...the sound a of new baby gasping for the that first breath of air in this world. I looked at that watch marking a time of change in my life when Erica died. The last time I saw the watch, I put it in an envelope in my desk drawer that said "To Faith", knowing that I would not be returning to that desk again.

Faith, I'm not with you now but I'm s glad you found the watch. Use it to mark your time on this earth and use every minute it ticks off to move forward. Don't let the watch rule you, use it to track your paths towards your destiny.

~
Dan Felstead

******

She remembered her grandfather taking the watch out of his pocket. It was strange seeing a watch on a chain in a pocket and not on a wrist. Why was her grandfather so different than other men? Why did he cherish that odd thing so much? As a little girl, she felt embarrassed by it. Why did he have to tell time that way? And why did he always polish it with that cloth before he slipped it back into his pocket?

Now, at the age of 36, sitting in her grandpa's house going through his things, she sees that watch. It's secured in a worn, velvet-lined box. She picks it up and sees for the first time that it's engraved on the back: SDH 1890. She does the math and realizes it was her great-grandfather's watch, and the date marks his 18th year.

She then sees the tiny slip of paper where the watch had been: For Faith.

A tear falls down her cheek as she picks up that same old cloth and gently polishes the beautiful watch she cherishes so much.

"Probably both suspecting each other and keeping apart - and life so very short." (From The Tuesday Club Murders, by Agatha Christie)

***

She flipped through the last pages of the magazine before tossing it aside. The waiting room was empty. The receptionist at the desk worked quietly behind the closed glass window, her belly big - evidence of the baby she was carrying.

Mary sighed, her own possible pregnancy a long-shot at this point. At forty-four, her fertility was waning - add to it the lack of a viable father - and she felt as though she would never experience the magic of carrying her own child, the lucky pain of bringing him or her into this world, or the joy of raising and guiding a new human life on this fragile planet.

She observed the receptionist with a cruel eye. She didn't note a band on her finger. Was she also a client? Would she also carry a child that had been placed inside her through artificial means? Had her body accepted this form of reproduction? And why her? She was only a receptionist. What kind of life could she offer to a beautiful, new life, ready to be shaped, and nurtured.

Mary reached for a second magazine, throwing an angry look towards the receptionist as the young girl looked up and smiled...

***

Amy's fingers froze on her keyboard as she gazed out through the reception window. The last patient of the day, Mary Bly, shot her a dirty look. Amy wished she had Mary's life - her clothes were proof of a rich wardrobe. Oh to have that kind of money! She would not want for anything, and life would be so easy.

Amy's shoulders twitched as she looked back at her computer screen, her personal email account open:

"Dear Mom,

I know I haven't sent an email in awhile, but things haven't been going well. I know I should call, but it's easier this way. I'm pregnant, and I don't know what to do. I can barely afford to take care of my darling babies now. Please don't ask about the father. He's not going to help out either.

I don't know what to do. What do I do?"

***

"Mary?" a nurse called as she opened the door into the waiting room.

"I'm the only one here," Mary mumbled as she rose, slinging her purse over her shoulder. She walked through the door and past the receptionist, who again offered a slight smile.

"You must be one of the lucky ones," Mary said tightly as she passed.

Amy's smile faded as she pressed 'send'. "I guess," she whispered.

Driving

Suggested prompt...

You are driving away from something or towards something.
Tell me about it creatively.

___________________

I drove and drove and drove. I didn't have a plan. I didn't follow a map. I just had to go and go. I had to get away. I felt the wind in my hair as my windows were open. The chill of the air was invigorating and I knew I could go on forever this way. I would leave it all behind. I would never go back. I had money in my purse and clothes on my back. I heard the roar of the engine and I felt so free.

Nothing could stop me now! He would never find me. He wouldn't have any idea where I went, because I don't know that yet, myself. I just wanted to drive.

The sun dropped lower and created long shadows across the road. I had to close my window as the temperature of the wind dropped, freezing my breath before my face. The heater felt nice against my frozen hands. I hadn't noticed how cold they were until the warm air hit them. It made me smile. It was comforting, the safety of my car. The sound of the tires' swift movement on the pavement created a calming hum. I didn't turn on the radio. All the music I knew would only remind me of...

The road was long and stretched before me until it finally disappeared around a curve, and for the first time I wondered where it would lead me. The possibilities were infinite. I burst into laughter. I couldn't help myself. It was effortless and felt like a release within me that had been long held in. I let my body heave with laughter until I no longer could breath. And then the tears came. I didn't understand myself. Where were the tears coming from? It surely wasn't unhappiness, but sure bliss. What a release! I let the tears fall freely until finally they ran dry. The light was fading behind the trees and I could see stars appearing in the skies like beacons of renewed life.

Then the lights appeared in my rearview mirror and I felt my stomach roll. For a short moment I contemplated putting on more gas. After all, I was making the biggest escape of my life. But my realistic side brushed away the adventurous thought. Of course that would eventually only take me back to him. So I put my foot gently on the break and pulled to the side, grabbing my purse to find my license.

I had just found it when I heard him tap on my window. I looked up and caught myself.

"Awe, Mrs. Jennings! What are you doing alone out here at this time of night?"

It was Frank. His best friend. I couldn't breath, and suddenly wished I hadn't stopped. "Oh, I'm just.." What can I tell him? "Headed to visit...my sister."

Include a mermaid in your writing today.

Since she had been a little girl, Sarah had dreamed of being a mermaid. After all, what little girl hadn't read the books and seen the movies and heard the stories of beautiful mermaids? The mermaids always had long flowing hair, shimmery tails, and beautifully colored seashells adorning their perfect bodies in just the right places. Every sailor longed to see a mermaid, diving gracefully and swimming smoothly through even the roughest of waters. For nearly all of her fifty years, Sarah imagined herself with her mermaid friends sitting on the rocks, singing and sunning.

But in reality, Sarah sat on the chaise by the pool, uncomfortable in a plain black bathing suit that couldn't hide her rolls and sagging body. The men looked at her in disgust. The bikini-clad women laughed at her, like some high school clique picking on the new girl.

A tanned and toned man approached her. "Sarah, are you ready for your first swimming lesson?"

Wanting to run in shame, Sarah hesitated. But as she looked at this man smiling at her, the inner mermaid emerged. Sarah stood and walked over to the pool. ::SPLASH::

She sunk to the bottom. She floundered, panicking. She fought to reach the surface. Breaking through, gasping for air, she heard applause. Were those cliques laughing at her, making fun of her?

As she wiped the chlorinated water from her eyes, she saw her instructor beaming at her. "Sarah, you have conquered your fear! You jumped right into that pool. You were scared, but you survived. I think that in time, you are going to become a great swimmer."

"No, I'm going to be a mermaid."

Next time, I'll try not to slopper on the ball

Lest we forget

Lest we forget the heartfelt pain
Of needless death for pointless gain.
We should be closer to the gore
To see what horrors lie in store
For victims of this terror game.

Rockets are fired at far terrain
And bombs are dropped from a plane;
People aren’t people any more.
Lest we forget.

The leaders would do it all again
They love to clap the band’s refrain.
It’s been truly said, oft before,
There are no winners in a war.
Except, of course, on the gravy train.
Lest we forget.
