Dark Bridge

You are on this bridge late at night...
Tell me the story or use it for a poem.

_____________________

I cross the bridge at night
remembering the day
with memories that fade
with every step I take

I re-cross at first light
that will turn into day
which fades to the night
when I cross the bridge again

Even though I retrace my steps
again and again,
I have walked further down the road

Dark Bridge

Sentry in the night,
Firm and solid,
Keeping river crossers safe from
The rushing, hungry waters.
New lights illumine the night,
Guarding us from ourselves.
New roads usher us to new places.
The bridge still stands,
Aloof, holding back the dark waters.

They built this bridge to ease their conscience. Walk across from the darkness into the light they say. When you live on the wrong side of the bridge, it is just not that easy to do it.

From my tenement house, I can see the sprawling mansions that the "good people" live in...moving about in their world, feeling good about how they have made it. I can cross that bridge but I am only there for the visit. Not part of that world, the world of the Pharisees.

I want to walk into their business centers and based on my abilities have the chance to raise myself out of this existence...but no chance...always an excuse...not connected, no degree, too old, too young...not the right fit.

I am human with the same dreams as you with the same desire to raise my family and pursue the dreams that you do...give me a chance, stop the hypocrisy...let me cross that bridge not to visit your world but to begin to be a productive part of it.

If not, tear down the bridge...don't tease me with your "charity" just so you feel better.

"Elisabeta wait!"Thomas called, but he didn't catch up to his sister til she was already on the bridge. Then it was too late, she heard the shot ring out from the other end. Elisabeta jumped back into his arms, "Stay still." He muttered. They waited, huddling in the shadows, and watched the body fall with an invisible splash in the river below. "Why do they do that, Thomas?" she wispered. The SS men were turning to leave, and Thomas tugged at his sister's arm, "Because they don't have faith." His voice sounded as hollow as his chest felt, "Just be glad they think ours is the right one." he said, and together they started for home.

I have walked the bridge at night
returning home from after school work, well after midnight. Then it was another 14 miles to go, hitchhiking.

The danger was there, but peaceful people walked and drove at night back then.

They threatened no one, they wanted to get home as well.

That was in the '60s. I wouldn't try it now. I'm not afraid of the dark or being alone, but wonder what gang members would love to throw me from the bridge just as an initiation feat?

I no longer have to walk alone in the darkness but pray for those who face an increasingly hostile world.

Bridges are no longer beautiful or romantic.

The question is not will I jump,
But rather in which direction.

Into the waters or back to the bridge,
I must soon make my selection.

To battle onwards bravely,
Or give in to lacking perfection?

To stand proudly in the sun,
Or hide from my own reflection?

Why was it so powerful,
That casual rejection?

I make my decision only to find,
For me these waters also hold no affection.

Stop
Don't jump
There is more
More to live for
Give yourself time
Come down the staircase
Remember who you are
Give yourself more
You are worth it
You are worth
Living for
Stop

Dark bridge at night
What is my plight

How did I get here?
What do I care?

Shall I jump today
or do I swear - keep walking I say

Onto the dark bridge
Keep walking I pray
On the dark bridge
