Clown

They say clowns are laughing on the inside,
Crying on the outside.
They say no clown is truly grinning,
More like dying.
They say, despite all their fears,
Clowns have no tears.
I look at his white
Face and wonder, are they right?

Wish me wisdom and I'll respect you.
Wish me long life and I'll thank you.
Wish me character and I'll hear you.
But wish me laughter and I'll love you.

As parents, we always take our children to see the clowns...filtered through our adult eyes, we see clowns in a totally different way than many children. The thought of a person behind a mask is unnerving to a child...perhaps we should listen to the innocent wisdom of a child.

Somehow those things back then which were used for such entertainment and laughter are just not what they used to be. Clowns were the stars of the shows when the circus would come to town and everyone would flock to their tent to see the performances, and to eat nuts and popcorn. Those clowns were the favorites to all the children. Somehow the world is so much darker today. Clowns are scary. Dark. What happened to all the joy and innocence? Technology ruined us. Ignorance is bliss. Truly.

Clown on a Highwire

I sit stupefied in my ignorance,
wondering how to present my defense,
at being such a careless dolt.

I had presumed to know her heart,
and now am left to fall apart,
as if hit by a lightning bolt.

I took her smile as an advance
and lept at my fortuitous chance,
like a newly branded bucking colt.

My flirtation was unwanted,
and I stand before affronted
perplexed by my obvious revolt.

As my pride crumbles like stone wall,
The whole world surely hears the call
of my rent heart which she doeth holt.

As she leaves with nose on high
I remain here alone to try
to weather my wounded ego's assault.

But I should have known better
than to dare to vie to get her,
and risk such an emotional jolt.

From now on I'll always stay true
to that which I prefer most to do,
And roll myself another je-zolt.

You laugh and tumble and fall to the ground. Making a fool of yourself just to make us giggle. But your painted-on smile is deceiving. I see beneath your mask. Your laughter doesn't reach your eyes. You look so sad. Why are you sad, Mr. Clown?

The photo of VEEKAY the zootsuit clown was taken at the Orange County (CA) 2008 Fair. Please read the story at http://www.zootsuitclown.com

I promise you that the mask in this case may be a way of coping in a world whose view of reality is through dissociated remote contact. Most people do not have a phobia of clowns.

If you ever see VEEKAY, have a hearty laugh with him. He's a very nice guy!
