Since she had been a little girl, Sarah had dreamed of being a mermaid. After all, what little girl hadn't read the books and seen the movies and heard the stories of beautiful mermaids? The mermaids always had long flowing hair, shimmery tails, and beautifully colored seashells adorning their perfect bodies in just the right places. Every sailor longed to see a mermaid, diving gracefully and swimming smoothly through even the roughest of waters. For nearly all of her fifty years, Sarah imagined herself with her mermaid friends sitting on the rocks, singing and sunning.

But in reality, Sarah sat on the chaise by the pool, uncomfortable in a plain black bathing suit that couldn't hide her rolls and sagging body. The men looked at her in disgust. The bikini-clad women laughed at her, like some high school clique picking on the new girl.

A tanned and toned man approached her. "Sarah, are you ready for your first swimming lesson?"

Wanting to run in shame, Sarah hesitated. But as she looked at this man smiling at her, the inner mermaid emerged. Sarah stood and walked over to the pool. ::SPLASH::

She sunk to the bottom. She floundered, panicking. She fought to reach the surface. Breaking through, gasping for air, she heard applause. Were those cliques laughing at her, making fun of her?

As she wiped the chlorinated water from her eyes, she saw her instructor beaming at her. "Sarah, you have conquered your fear! You jumped right into that pool. You were scared, but you survived. I think that in time, you are going to become a great swimmer."

"No, I'm going to be a mermaid."

A silent ocean fills her dreams. Orchestra of life surrounds her in darkness. The world above the surface has no hold on her. She swims; she glides; she dances. Waking up in a cold, battered apartment, this poor child will be liberated tonight in her mermaid dream again.

A Seafood Allergy

I’ve never understood that seafood dish,
One part woman, one part fish.
Old sea salts, in a crackling voice,
Swear they were the catch of choice
But I can’t really say I totally agree
With these nostalgic captains of the sea.

I like my women full bodied and warm
Not blown onto rocks by a sudden storm,
Cold and wet and quite derelict
(At least their nipples would be erect)
These creatures of the briny sea
Seem highly over-rated to me.

While the literature all does attest
Them to be long of hair and full of breast,
And, reportedly, they sing a siren’s song,
For sex, at least, their geometry’s wrong.
The books are silent on positions for fun
But it’s certainly not the missionary one.

I respect the captains and their notions
Of lovely mermaids in distant oceans
But it’s not the dream of most sane males
For their woman to be half clad in scales.
So, let me be firm and brutally straight:
I like my fish,
But with chips, on a plate.

She's waving in the waves,
But I cannot swim;
She smiles devilishly,
But I am not him.
She shimmies suggestively,
But our chances are slim.

She swims a little closer,
Beckons me in;
I shrug and shout to her:
I would serve your every whim,
I would always be true to you...
But I simply cannot swim.

I've dreamed of having as my lover
the golden-haired siren of the sea,
but though I've sailed all over,
she's never appeared to me.

She's just a fish taile.
