Waiting for the Call

He/she said he/she would call.

____________________

He’s wonderful,
He’s sweet.
For a little while.
He makes you fall in love with him,
Then leaves without a word.
A hug,
A kiss, or perhaps
Just a goodbye.
So full of promise.
You forget for a while,
Everything but that goodbye.
And it is a while before you realize
That you have not heard from him
But it’s okay,
Because the memory
Of that one hug alone
Is enough to make you happy.
Then after a few more days,
You want more.
But that’s okay too,
Because he promises to call.
He says he wants to see you again.
So you wait
Patiently,
With stars in your eyes.
Perhaps he is too busy,
Perhaps it has just slipped is mind,
Perhaps he is too shy.
(Oh folly!
What a thought!)
So you drop him note,
It sounds nonchalant,
But it is sent
With all your heart.
And you wait.
And you wait.
Nothing.

And so it seems that I
Am merely a fool.

The orange glow from the light outside by bedroom window casts an eerie facade on my ceiling. The soothing hum of the fan isn't enough to lull me back to sleep. I feel as if I had been awake for hours, although the clock says 7:18. My stomach feels empty, my lungs feel tight, and the goosebumps on my legs are almost painful. They shiver a little bit. I'm not cold, but nervous and excited. I haven't seen him for nine years. We had a little fling in Middle School, became friends, lost touch, and found each other again on the internet. We've stayed so much the same, and yet our lives have changed so much. He's graduating college soon and I'm already married and moved out of the state. Talking to him, I can feel the great difference in our experience and wisdom since we were younger, which is often so very comforting. But now my mind is racing. What will I do when he gets here? Will he move in for the hug first, or will I beat him to it? How long? How tight? He's become my best friend over the past few months, but I do not want my husband to feel intimidated. The balance must be perfect for the next few days. It's 7:24 now. I curse my thoughts for not taking more time. He said he would call when he got into our town, and was expecting to be here around 8:00. I've decided it's a good time to get up and check my phone for messages. I give my snoring husband a gentle kiss on the temple, put my glasses on, and slip out of bed. The exact moment I open my bedroom door, I felt my heart split it two; half going to my throat, the other half falling down to my stomach, practically knocking the rest of my insides down towards my feet. The phone had just begun to ring.

((he hit some traffic and should be here in about an hour. I can't sleep now!))

She sat on the loveseat, legs curled up beneath her, hugging the blue pillow. The one with the gold fringe. They had picked out the accent pillows together. Holding hands, basking in the glow of new love, they had wandered the department store. Playfully arguing about the print. She wanted paisley. He wanted stripes. It seemed so silly now. What did the print matter if he wasn't here to enjoy them? With her. He had rushed out to the airport, a hurried kiss on the cheek. "I'll call you when I get there." He was worried he'd miss his flight, be late for the big meeting. And while she tidied up Simon's toys, the news reporter talked calmly about the crash. Shortly after take off. No survivors. She had sat down and rocked back and forth, waiting. For what, she wasn't sure. Then the phone rang. Her stomache dropped. She knew who was calling. And when she picked up the phone, there was a familiar voice on the other end. "Sweetheart. I missed my flight."

I keep watching the clock tick away mercilessly as I calculate the time zone difference.

Where is he now?

What is he doing?

When will he call?

My love, my husband, when will I hear your voice?

And, then I realize it's only 8:30am and he is still sleeping.

He said he would call, that was an hour ago. It is not like him to be late for anything. What could be wrong? I hope all is ok. Should I call him? He had to do something important and he would have a surprise for me. He wanted to make sure I would be home. What could all this be about?

Everything stood still
The grandfather clock's pendulum was the only sound in the whole house
It swung back and forth
Back and forth

And I waited

I sat in my chair by the window
The sheer white curtains pulled back
I watched the cloudy overcast sky
The clouds moved
It seemed they were the only things moving in the world

And I waited

DONG
The grandfather clock struck
DONG
It was two o'clock in the afternoon
But outside it looked like dusk
The gentle light from the window was the only light in the room
And the phone still didn't ring

Everything seemed dull today
Black and white
Colorless
Odorless
Emotionless

And I waited

Audrey was determined to wait by the phone until her agent called. This part would put her on the map, she could feel it. She was doing so well, until Mr. Famous had an "accident". She was scolding him when phone rang on the other side of the house. Breathless, she snatched it up on the last ring, "Hello?" she said. "Audrey, baby, you got it!" shouted her agent from the other end, "You're Princess Ann!" Her excitemtent bubbled to her face in a wide white smile. "Thank you." she said happily, retaining her image of refined and sophisticated. Until of course the call had ended and she was free to celebrate, "We did Mr. Famous! We're really going to be famous!!"

Calling is what he said he would do
I wait with excitement and fated breathe
I thought there was a real connection
I wait for that call

FAST FORWARD NOW
I am wiser and older
He said he would call
I am full of disbelief and carry a facade now
I don't care if he will call
I go about my business and get on wiht my life
No longer waiting around
For a call that will not come
A call that was promised, like I was just anyone

The crack spider says: "Waiting for someone to call is for suckers!". So I pulled the phone from the wall and smushed his sassy little ass. Then I went into the yard to do the work that I find hard. I must tend to my wood, and tend it well I should. For at the end of every day we are left with naught to say, but did I get mine?? And if you can't sit on my porch with a lemonade and say it to me as we swing, then I prefer you didn't ring.
