Taxi, taxi, headlights bright
In the city deep of night,
Transmission shifting into drive
Take me somewhere more alive.
On what distant hills or dales
Overlooking roads and trails
Do I dream of trees and fields
All that rural living yields?
And what steel post and what wall
Could my tired eyes enthrall?
What is there to hold me here
In this darkness tinged with fear?
Start the meter, throttle down
Let’s get set to leave this town.
Turn the corner; don’t look back
Dim the light on your roof rack.
Skyline fading far behind,
Out of sight and out of mind,
Contentment is the place to be
So much more for us to see.
Taxi, taxi, headlights bright
In the city deep of night,
Transmission shifting into drive
Take me somewhere more alive.

New Zealand has a name for being 'clean and green'. I had a nice introduction to this policy on arrival in Wellington last Octorber. I could not find a taxi rank at the station, and asked a bus driver, who kindly called a taxi for me. Lo and behold, the taxi company is named Green Cabs, and they run a fleet of Toyota Prius hybrid cars. On the short trip to my lodging the screen readout on the dash showed zero use of fuel; the ride was a as smooth as silk on the elctric drive. I called Green Cabs again when I needed to get to the airport. It was quite a long trip, through morning traffic, and at the airport the driver showed me that the car had used no fuel at all! No emissions, no pollution, and no noise. I wish I could afford one of those, that's really a positive green idea!
I am supposed to write about a taxi,
but it has already been done.
Carly Simon said it best,
in her three decades old song.
Her title composition say,
" a big yellow taxi came
and took my baby away"
I hate to sing the same.
But a taxi actually did come
and it took away my brood!
I don't know where it came from
but it left me in dour mood!
So to hell with that damn cab,
If it comes this way again
I'll car jack the unlucky cabbie
and set fire to his ride, my friend!

An easy one for me...I was on a business trip in New York City a short time after 911. I took a taxi from Times square to ground zero. My taxi driver was a gentleman from St. Petersburg (Russia). We struck up a conversation...I am one to do that (I don't even like silence on an elevator..I have to talk). He was driving his taxi on that Tuesday morning - September 11th and relayed his story and feelings of that day. It was as if I was listening to an audible book on my ipod...the description, the emotions, even his tears were the reaction of a man truly distraught and forever changed by the sounds, sights and even smells of that eventful day. I wish I had a voice recorder with me...only this man could tell his story.
After stepping out of the cab, I wandered ground zero as a zombie replaying his story in my mind as I witnessed the destruction wrought on that day.

Taxi! Taxi! Take me to work, in my splendid suit, in my warpaint, my heels.
Taxi! Taxi! Take me back home, I was late doing business, the trains are all gone.
Taxi! Taxi! Take me out to play, to the bars, the backstreets, the doors painted grey.
Taxi! Taxi! To the airport we go, to exotic shores, vibrant skies, with my client in tow.
Taxi! Taxi! Don't drive past, take me somewhere, anywhere, and make it fast!
Taxi! Taxi! Bring me back home, don't ever dump me in the jungle alone.
PS Who am I?
The taxi dancer takes a cab at the taxi stand, on the way to the airport where a plane waits to taxi down the runway, lifting her over the ocean away from her drab life pushing weak drinks.

Difficult. My thoughts keep taxiing away ...
Pick me up
Take me free
To some far away place
Where I can mold
Bend and fold
My time and my space.
You're going to laugh at this, well maybe not...
I have NEVER had a ride in a Taxi.
