Best friends since we were little girls
In our patent leather shoes and fluffy skirts
Playing hopscotch and double dutch
And running from the boys and their cooties
Best friends still starting high school
Baggy jeans and rocker tees
Dances to attend, gossip to exchange
And chasing every cute boy we saw
Best friends starting college
Side by side we went
Just us against the world
Chasing all our crazy dreams
Best friends through it all
Unplanned pregnancies
Weddings planned
And parents’ passing
Twenty years passing
In the blink of an eye
Yet, we all stand together
Still best friends after all this time.

My shoes are prettier than your shoes!
Dressed in their finest,
all lined up for review.
Young girls elated,
like princesses at court.
They sway like lilies,
to a catchy tune.
Those familiar boys evolve,
before their eyes into princes.
Dancing shoes are ready,
as the first boy approaches.
I was one of those girls. Shiny patent leather shoes, ruffly socks. Rhumba panties, even.
Innocent days. Safety in numbers.
Now I rarely stand up straight, and never in a group of women. I'm likely to be leaning against a wall, alone, watching the action from afar.
Not so innocent, but still afraid.
